The Leeds Sports Awards are back!

The 18th Annual Leeds Sports Awards are back.

For the first time, the Awards will take place live on Leeds TV on 27th May between 18:30 and 20:00.  The live show can be seen on Sky Channel 117, Virgin Channel 159 and Freeview Channel 7.  Hosted by Tanya Arnold, the live show will celebrate the sporting achievements of those in the city during 2020 and acknowledge the community endeavours of so many.

 2021 Awards
2020 was a challenging year for everyone, with sport particularly badly affected at entry level.  Despite the difficult circumstances, there were some fantastic sporting performances from the city's professional teams and athletes.  Even more important was the incredible effort of people and organisations from across the city who kept communities active.  This community spirit is recognised with two new awards - the Inspirational Community Champions, for both under and over 18's.

The nomination process is now open so don't miss out on your chance to nominate your favourite sporting stars and teams together with the unsung community heroes of 2020.  Just click here to get started.  From your nominations, a panel of judges, representing sport across the city, will determine the winners and these will be revealed live on the Awards show.

The closing date for nominations is midnight on Sunday 2nd May.

Armley Leisure Centre - Shoes

Dear Parent/Guardian,

We have been asked to ensure that swimmers remove their shoes before entering the changing area at Armley Leisure Centre. This request has come from the leisure centre management team who have said that dirt/mud is being brought onto poolside.

Can you please ensure that your child is aware of this and that they remove shoes before entering the changing area and that shoes are not put back on until reaching the exit point.

Thanks in advance for your support.

Kind regards,

Return to the Water

Hi All,

We are looking forward to welcoming back the Regional Squads back next Monday evening.  We hope the swimmers are as excited as we are to be back in the pool!  We are extremely proud of you all for attending the Zoom workouts each week throughout lockdown and for managing to stay focused through these uncertain times.

I know there will be a lot of different feelings amongst the group as we approach the start of diving back into the pool. It is fine to feel anxious about the return as this shows excitement in getting back to what you love doing. There will be no pressure over the next few weeks as training builds back up slowly. The fantastic work you have done with David over the last 3 months will have helped maintain your fitness and strength levels whilst there has been no swimming.

At the moment there are no competitions planned, however Swim England have just released plans to hold a summer 'Festival of Swimming', and they are also bringing back the 'Level X Racing' which will give us all something to look forward to and work towards.

We would like to share with you, the training plan for the first two weeks back. You will notice that there are no Monday or Thursday morning's the first 2 weeks back, this is to allow everyone to focus mainly on getting back their feel for the water.

Please also note, the Swim Training Scheme will shut down for a Summer Break from 1st – 22nd August 2021, inclusive.

The session arrival times will be the same as they were before lockdown and they are likely to stay like this until June 21st when hopefully, the restrictions get lifted.

I know everyone will be excited to see each other again next week but please remember to be socially distant when waiting for your coach to collect you and whilst on poolside.

The changing room areas are still closed, and swimmers must arrive beach ready to get changed on poolside.

Please remember to bring your masks.  It may be worth having a spare mask in your bag just in case you forget.  Swimmers who fail to bring a mask will not be allowed to enter the building.  Masks must be worn at all times until it is time to enter the water.

On that note enjoy your last 2 days off and we will see you all on Monday.

Regional Development swimmers please note I will be away at the Olympic Trials in London with City of Leeds swimmer Izzy Goodwin from Tuesday 13th – Saturday 17th April.  If you have any issues in my absence, please email Sharon Barraclough (Sharon.barraclough@leeds.gov.uk).  I will be sending the sessions through and you will have the following coaches taking you whilst I am away.  Work hard and have fun! Regional Squad Land Training Changes

Hi All,

Please take note of the following changes to training over the Easter weekend.

Friday 2nd April – No Land Training Zoom (Good Friday)

Monday 5th April – No Facebook Workout (Easter Monday)

Enjoy your long weekend off over Easter 😁

So that the squad do not miss out on a Zoom workout next week we have rearranged the Good Friday Zoom session with David to take place on Monday 29th March.

The Zoom session details were included in the email sent out.

As usual the waiting room will be open 15 minutes before the start so we can hopefully have a prompt start at 5:30pm.  Please use this 15-minute log in period to check your screen name is set so the coaches can take the register, and that your camera is on and working so David can give you any feedback.

Please remember to come with a drink to hand ready for the workout.

Please can swimmers ensure that they have a working camera for Monday's session and the camera stays on for the full duration of the call.  Due to safeguarding issues, we must be able to see the swimmer on each camera.  Swimmers who fail to have their camera on at the start of the workout will be removed from the call.

We look forward to seeing you online.

Regional Swimming Championships (50m) 2021 - Update

Swimmers and Parents/Carers will realise that it would not be possible to deliver the Regional Swimming Championships in April/May 2021 with the current social distancing rules are in place.

The indications are that the current social distancing restrictions will not be relaxed by HM Government for some time.
Although age group swimmers could be allowed to return to the pool on 12th April (not confirmed until 5th April) senior swimmers will not be returning until after the Championships would have taken place.

Clearly most age group swimmers would not be fit enough to compete in a Regional Championships two weeks after returning to the pool.

The Swim England Swimming Leadership Group are working on plans to enable competitive swimming to return as soon as conditions allow. We will keep you updated on progress.

We hope that it may be possible to hold our Regional Championships (25m) in November 2021 as planned.
I realise that this will be a disappointment to many swimmers, but the safety of our members must take priority over all other considerations.

Free Team Manager 2 Course

There is a 'great opportunity' for Swim England team managers to build on the skills learned in the previous lockdowns with another free online course.

The workshops aim to further enhance the knowledge gained when completing the Team Manager 1 courses held in 2020 – putting clubs in a better place ahead of events and competitions returning.

The Team Manager 2 courses are appropriate for all those who are working with a team or club in camps and competitions, both domestically and internationally.

They cover all aquatic disciplines and will again be delivered via Zoom on two dates in February and one in March.

The requirements in order to take part in the course are:

  • Must hold a Swim England membership
  • Must have an in date DBS check on membership record
  • Must have an approved safeguarding certificate on membership record
  • Must have completed the Team Manager 1 course
  • Must identify as a team manager on the Club Personnel Report
  • Must be 18 or older.

Build on success

Claire Coleman, Swim England Head of Development, said: "We are excited to start running the Team Manager 2 courses and build on from the success of the Team Manager 1 courses.

"This additional training will help to ensure clubs are ready to go once we are back in the water again.

"For those team managers who are wanting to take advantage of this great opportunity but can't make the current available dates, please make sure that you register your interest."

A maximum of 25 places are available for each course.

If the dates above are fully booked, or you are unable to attend on those dates, you can pre-register your interest.
