Video Analysis

Hi All,

I would like to start using the ipad again to do some filming and play back to the swimmers during some sessions so they can see where they need to improve in their strokes.  This proved a very useful tool for the swimmers last season.  If anyone has an objection to their child being filmed during training please send me an email to let me know and they will be left out.

Thanks

Kevin

Land Training

Hi All,

Land training will start up again on Monday 1st October for all swimmers aged 11 years and over from both squads.  It will take place in the dry side gym every Monday night 5.30 - 6.15pm with Tom Spencer & Stephen Waterhouse.   The aim of the gym sessions are to introduce exercises to the swimmers with focus on safety and correct form.  Emphasis will be placed on developing flexibility, core stability, strength and power using body weight only exercises.  Land training is part of Monday nights session and should not be missed, a register will be taken.

The following swimmers are expected to attend the land training sessions from next week;

Regional 1
Erin, Kit, Helena, Megan, Abigail J, Shaheen, Amber, John, Lauren, Rebecca, Sam, Hollie, Julia, Zoe, Charles, Jade, Huzayfa, Thomas

Regional 2
Carl, Ayesha, Emelye, Joe, Isabel, Jake S, Aaron, Aimee, Alice, Jake H, Hannah, Nathan L, Eve, Nathan S, Jonathan, Niamh

The gym sessions will be fun, enjoyable and challenging.  Swimmers should arrive in gym kit (t-shirt, shorts, trainers and a drinks bottle) ready to start the work out on time. Safety is a big priority whilst in the gym and bad behavior will not be tolerated.  We would like to create a positive atmosphere where everyone can work hard to achieve their goals.  Any swimmers who have to be removed from work out due to bad behavior will not be welcome at the pool session following the gym and a parent will be rung and told to collect their child.

There is a 15 minute window from the end of land training to the start of the pool session, this gives you all plenty of time to get changed into your swim kit and arrive on time for the pool session.  I would advise wearing swim kit under your gym kit then you will have more time to rest before starting the pool work out.  Swimmers who do not have land training, I am in the process of trying to get you some elastic stretch bands which you can use on poolside before workouts.

You are all training exceptionally well at the moment. Keep up the hard work!!! Smile

Test Set Mini Olympics

Over the last few Sunday sessions both groups have performed a series of test sets and the results were recorded.

The Mini Olympic test set was made up of 3 tests.  A swim test, a kick test and an underwater test.  Each test consisted of different levels where the swimmers would start off easy and then progressively have to work harder to complete levels until they could not go any longer.

The results from the test can be viewed by clicking the link below.  Swimmers who were absent were given 0 points for the test.  At this point in the season the results do not really matter too much, what it gives the swimmers is a benchmark score to beat next time we perform the test which will be some time before Christmas.  Hopefully next time the test is performed the swimmers will improve their scores from this test showing that they are becoming increasingly fitter and faster.

Junior League - Northern Final

Hi all,

Please note that the Northern Junior League final falls upon the second day of the City of Leeds Grand Prix Meet. Therefore the City of Leeds exec committee have ensured that any entries made will be refunded in the event that a swimmer is selected to represent the team at the Northern Final.

The team will be travelling by coach on Sunday 7th October to the Palatine Leisure Centre in Blackpool. The aim will be to arrive for 11:45am. Doors open at 12:00pm and a parade of the teams will take place shortly after. Warm-up will be 1:00pm. Competition begins at 2:00pm.

Therefore please meet at the John Charles Centre for 9:30am. There will be NO stops en route.

Time will be limited for lunch, therefore I advise a hearty breakfast, and plenty of snacks as well as a sandwich; But most of all, please ensure they have ample to drink.

Spectator seating has been assigned by the Junior League Organiser. 44 Seats have been allocated to City of Leeds. There are 34 swimmers selected. Therefore for each child representing 1 spectator seat has been allocated. Each allocated Spectator may request 1 additional spectator ticket which will be placed in a ballot drawn as soon as possible. There will be no access to the Palatine Centre without an authorised ticket sold by the City of Leeds Swimming Club.

Tickets will cost £14 and include Transport with an organised bus from John Charles Centre 'to and from' the Palatine Leisure Centre in Blackpool. If you do  not wish to use the Bus, the cost of the ticket will still be £14.

Lucie or Tony Black (Layla & Maisie Black's Mum & Dad) will be taking payment for Junior League tickets. Cheques must be made payable to: 'City of Leeds Swimming Club'.

Ladies and Gentlemen, please ensure you wear YELLOW on the day, these are our team colours and you are our supporters. Even if you do not have a club T-Shirt, please wear a yellow top. Ensure you voice boxes are in good working order. We expect you to be the loudest people there. The children can not see you when they swim…but if you're loud enough…they will hear you!

Please could you all ensure that you have sent your T-shirt sizes to Craig (craig.robinson@leeds.gov.uk). Note to new members of the Junior League team: 1 T-Shirt is provided for each team member free by the City of Leeds Supporters committee. The following team members still need to let Craig know your T-Shirt size.

Reminder

Please remember swimmers are expected to arrive on poolside 10 - 15 minutes before the training session starts in order to do light blood flow exercises and prepare for the work out.  We do appreciate that sometimes swimmers are late due to factors beyond our control, but it seems to be the same swimmers arriving late.  The aim is to dive in the water on time so we can make use of all our pool time and maximise potential.  There are still some swimmers not turning up to training until 15 minutes into the session.  This then disrupts the session for everyone else and is also a danger to swimmers becoming injured due to not warming up properly.  We currently have 10 hours pool time per week and missing 5 minutes per session nearly adds up to a full session missed.

Underwater Fly Leg Kick - 5th Stroke

Check out the speed of the Fly leg kick on these videos. These videos show that Butterfly kick is the 5th stroke as it can be done faster than the world record.

Hill Taylor (Lane 7) - 50m Long Course Butterfly Kick on back in 23.10 (Liam Tancock's LC World Record 24.04)

Ryan Locte - 50m Short Course Butterfly Kick on back in 20.80 (Peter Marshall's SC World Record 22.61)

This is what you should be aiming to do for the first 5 metres of every push off. This is what gets pb's and medals. You should all try and aim to beat your rival in the next lane on each push off during training by racing the first 5m kick feet to flags.

Duncan Goodhew Vist

There has been a change to the Duncan Goodhew visit. Duncan will now visit the Club on Monday 24th September 2012 at 6.15 pm. The visit is in recognition of the City of Leeds having the highest number of participants in the 2012 National Swimathon. Duncan will be delivering a coaching session to the swimmers in our Regional Squads. If you took part in the 2012 Swimathon and you would like to meet Duncan but you do not ordinarily swim with the Regional Squads you are welcome to join the squad for that evening. I understand that Duncan will be available for photographs.

New Blog Name

Over the past 3 years the blog has become very popular and useful tool to have for all the swimmers and parents of C Central.  In the new structure Regional 1 & 2 will be running along side each other with the same competition programme, I will therefore be making the blog into a joint noticeboard for all parents and swimmers of both Regional Squads.

The name of the blog from now on will be:

Duncan Goodhew Visit

Just to let all you all know that Olympic Champion Duncan Goodhew will be visiting Leeds on Monday 10th September. Apparently the City of Leeds Swimming Club had more swimmers taking part in the 2012 Swimathon than any other club in the UK so Duncan is coming down to thank us on behalf of the organisation.

Duncan will be taking the training session for the swimmers from Regional Squad 1 & 2 (6.30-8.00pm) during the evening and will be available for photo opportunities and autographs.

If you were one of the those who took part in the Swimathon and you would like to meet Duncan, then you are welcome to come down to the pool at 6.30 with the Regional Squads.

Kevin & Elysha

Junior League

We will be doing a 1.5 hour session covering, Starts, Turns and Takeovers.

Therefore, please could ALL members of the Junior League Team report to poolside on Monday 3rd September at 6:15pm (until 8:00pm).

Please disregard your appointed training time for this evening, as they will need their energy as we put them through their paces ensuring their skills are to the highest standard the National Junior League Champions require.

Also a kind reminder that the Team needs to be at Harrogate Hydro on Saturday 8th September for 3:30pm. It is essential we have everyone together on time to minimise disruption to team changes. Once a team change has been made because of a late arrival or absence it is improbable that the team can be changed back.

Please ensure your child has Team Kit for the event, not only is this effective for our management of the team but we like to blind our enemies with a blaze of yellow(not blue please). Therefore if you have not purchased any team kit yet, please ensure you do so from the club shop on Monday 3rd September.

As with all City of Leeds Team events, please respect that we are there as one, and children should, win or lose, remain at the end to cheer their team… as should you.

Suporting parents please remember your hats, wigs, horns, face paints etc. The louder you cheer the faster the swimmers will go.

Welcome Back!

Hi All,

Welcome back to training and to your new group Regional Age Group 1, hope you all had a nice restful break.  The hard work will start again very soon.

At the moment we will be working hard on perfecting the skills and stroke techniques, like they were just before we broke up.  The quicker the skills are in place again the quicker we can get to the hard stuff. Winking smile

Our first morning session will be on Monday 3rd September.

There will be no land training on this week as Stephen is at the Paralympics and Shaun is away with diving.
