REOPENING UPDATE - Welcome back to Active Leeds

First of all I would like to thank you for your patience and understanding during this difficult time. After the government announcement last week we have been working hard closely following government guidelines, to ensure Active Leeds can provide you with a safe environment to keep active. I would also like to thank everyone who has filled out one of our surveys during lockdown. These results have played a significant part in our reopening plans. As I'm sure you'll understand things may look a little different to how they did prior to lockdown, but we are now delighted to be able to reopen our doors and start welcoming you back.

We are preparing to reopening our centres in different phases, starting with Holt Park Active on Monday 27th July, followed by Aireborough, Armley, John Charles, John Smeaton and Morley on Wednesday 29th July. To begin with centres will only be available for the Gym and Group Exercise classes. We will be posting the full site by site timetable to the Active Leeds website and App on Monday 20th July. We are busy working on resuming pool activities as well and hope to have further updates next week.

There is still plenty of work to do to ensure all of our centres can reopen safely, but I assure you we are working very hard and plans are well underway. However things are constantly changing and therefore we will keep you informed of any developments .

Swim Training Scheme Update

Good afternoon everyone,

As you will be aware the government has now given the green light to open leisure centres, which is great news and another step forward towards a new normal.

Whilst it may seem simple to open the doors and for normal operations to resume, unfortunately it isn't!

Moving forwards Leeds City Council must apply strategies and protocols to limit the spread of COVID-19 throughout its buildings. This involves staff organising buildings so that it is safe for people to visit and use the facilities under the government's guidance and social distancing. We also must work with guidelines from Swim England to start all aspects of aquatics as quickly and as safely as possible.

Currently, Active Leeds which includes facility and training scheme staff, have been redeployed to other services within the council, this in itself will be a large task to bring staff back from redeployment so that other services are not left short. Staff then need to be retrained to operate safely in the buildings. This again is a timely exercise.

The training schemes staff have been working with senior council management and facility management across the city to organise a return for the training schemes. There is plenty to consider such as risk assessments, numbers in buildings, one way systems, social distancing spacing, the list is endless to make sure everyone is safe on return.

Whilst all this work is being completed day by day, all work has to be signed off by the Senior Management Team, which then liaises with unions, at this point if all is agreed it will go to a Silver Command group for the whole of the council to be signed off. This is a timely and thorough process, but, one which will help facilities and staff to have safe processes in place to keep everyone safe during their visits to the council facilities.

Considering all this information and work that is ongoing the aquatic training schemes will not be returning in July, we are aiming for a date to be confirmed in August.

Whilst I appreciate this may be frustrating and everyone is excited about the prospect of returning to training, please stay patient a little while longer while we co-ordinate a safe return for everyone.

If you have any further questions, please contact your respective training scheme staff.

Stay safe.

Regards

Richard

Processing emotions in times of uncertainty

Times of uncertainty can play havoc with your emotions, not knowing whether your next swimming session is next month, later in the year, or even next year.

Swim England sport psychologists Hannah Stoyel and Helen Davis have put together a video for Swim England club members, coaches and parents to help understand how to identify and process these emotions.

Unprecedented situation

Hannah and Helen impress that we are in an unprecedented situation at the moment, with pools indefinitely closed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

There is a huge range of emotions that we might feel about this – sometimes many over a short period of time. It's important to remember that all these emotions are valid reactions, when we're feeling out of control.

Hannah and Helen refer to Geoffrey Roberts's Feeling Wheel (see video) and how this can help us identify how and why we are feeling a certain way.

While not many things feel normal in times of uncertainty, we develop a new normal.

Thank you for supporting #OpenOurPools

We wanted to say a huge thank you for supporting our campaign to get pools reopened!

As a result of your efforts, the Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed a timetable for the reopening of swimming pools will be announced this week.

This announcement was made after government and public health officials toured four swimming pools to see at first-hand how facilities are able to operate safely.

As well as this, #OpenOurPools has been covered by a wide range of national media such as BBC News, ITV News, the Guardian, the Telegraph, the Mail Online and many more.

Athletes have also used their platform to raise awareness of the campaign and there has been great support across social media. This resulted in #OpenOurPools being the second highest trending hashtag on Twitter in the UK during the first day.

As we wait for a date for pools to reopen, please continue your support across social media and make sure you tag Swim England in your posts:
