Welsh Summer Open Meet - Expression of Interest

Dear Parent,

The window of opportunity to express your interest in your child swimming at the Welsh Summer Open Meet (WSO) is now open. This window will close on Thursday 4th May.

The Welsh Summer Open Meet runs from Thursday 3rd August until Monday 7th August. The team bus will travel to Swansea on Wednesday 2nd August and return on Tuesday 8th August.

This competition acts as an excellent platform for preparing Junior Athletes for life away from home at Swimming Camps and long challenging competitions.

This opportunity is presented to children in National Squad, National Age Group, National Development, Regional Performance and Regional Development who meet the eligible age for competition, which are 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 & over (age at 31st December 2023).

Members of National Squad, National Age Group and National Development are reminded that this meet is the end of season target meet for those who have not or can't qualify for the British or English Summer Nationals. If it isn't certain that you will qualify for a British or English Nationals event, then we advise you to express interest in attending the WSO.

Please note that for the time being this is simply an 'expression of interest'. Swimmers must meet the qualifying times published by Swim Wales in order to enter the competition.  The cost of the Welsh Summer Meet will be confirmed on the presentation evening which will include travel, accommodation, food and staffing. The cost of swimming events must be entered individually. There will be further communication when this is due.

Welsh Summer Nationals selection policy and code of conduct can be viewed by clicking the link below;

Welsh Summer Nationals Selection Policy

To give an idea of qualifying times, we have included a link to the 2022 times below.

Welsh Summer Nationals Qualifying Times

We would like to invite you to join us at a Presentation evening to provide more information about the event, in the Grandstand Suite of the Grandstand Building on Monday 15th May, from 6:45pm until 7:30pm.

Please email Kevin Schofield at Kevin.Schofield@leeds.gov.uk to express your interest in your child attending the event.

Kind regards,

The STS Coaching Team

North Eastern Counties - Weekend 1

This weekend is the first weekend of the big one for those swimmers who have qualified.  Let's SMASH IT!!

Remember use the walls to pick up speed, not loose speed, every millisecond counts.  Pick up the effort every 50m and hold your technique when feeling tired.

Just a reminder of the arrival times at Sunderland Aquatic Centre this weekend.

Am Sessions (Heats)
Arrive: 30 Minutes before your scheduled warm up (Click Here)
Start: 09:00

The draft programme can be viewed here.  Final instructions including withdrawals, spectator tickets, volunteers and live streaming can be viewed here.

Training Changes
Friday 21st April Pm = 18:30 - 19:30 (Just 1 hour for those swimmers competing at NER's, normal for the rest)
Saturday 22nd April Am = No training for NER Swimmers, normal for rest.
Monday 24th April Am = Normal (Am off only if you have competed both days over the weekend)

Please make sure you all prepare well and stay hydrated over the weekend; it will be very hot on poolside.  Remember your snacks for poolside off the nutrition list.

"Before the (Olympic) trials I was doing a lot of relaxing exercises and visualisation.  And I think that that helped me to get a feel of what It was gonna be like when I got there.  I knew that I had done everything that I could to get ready for that meet, both physically and mentally".  (Michael phelps, 6 Gold Medals, 2004 Olympic Games)

Like Michael Phelps, you should plan in your head what you are going to do in your race.  Visualise your streamlining, kicks off the wall, not breathing last 5m etc and it will happen.  Thinking about skills after the race is too late.

Best of luck to you all
