Olympic Torch

Dear all parents/guardians/swimmers/club committee/coaches

As you may or may not be aware the Olympic Torch is due to visit Leeds on Sunday 24th and Monday 25th June. As part of its route it will be coming to JCCS on Monday 25th June at 8.03am. We are welcoming Swimmers, Parents, Coaches to join in the celebration by lining the Athletics Track for when the Torch comes past and is passed on to the next bearer.

Details of the morning are as follows:

Schools, Clubs etc to arrive between 6.30-7.30am

All people to enter via the Main Entrance of the Stadium Building (there will be marshals to direct you)

COLSC location for the morning will be the far side of the track of the grass banking

No admittance after 7.30am

Exit out of the stadium will be from 8.30am once the torch has left at approximately 8.15am.

If you wish to join us to see the Olympic Torch then there will be a notice on the Club Noticeboard at JCCS, please put names of attendees on there (this will just give me an idea of how many to expect). All swimmers should be in Club kit.

There will be a photographer and the BBC in attendance on the morning, therefore if your swimmer is under 18 and wish for them not to be included in any pictures etc then please do get in touch.

I hope you can join us for this event.

Kevin

Training Amendments

We are awaiting the confirmation of the security procedures for the swimmers during the period of 5th July-22nd July.  The details of this will be out next week.  I have highligted in Red the changes from the previous times sent out.

Training Alterations

Dear Swimmers & Parents,

As you may already know, we are very privileged to be welcoming both the Chinese and Dutch Olympic Swimming Teams to Leeds during the period of their holding camps before they move to the games village in London. The Chinese and Dutch teams have some of the very best swimmers in the world who will be challenging for medals in London and we are delighted that they have chosen Leeds as the venue for their final preparations.

There will be however, some disruption to our own training programme during this period (25th June-22nd July). The timetable has changed very little but we are nonetheless faced with the challenge of working with a moderate reduction in pool space. This will have some implications for the programme as a whole and for squads preparing for the National Age, National Youth and Welsh National Championships in particular.

However, because both the Chinese and Dutch Olympic Teams have taken the unprecedented decision to share the facility and train with us side by side during their holding camp, the initial fears of the potential for disruption to our own preparations have allayed and we are very confident that there will be no impact on our performances at the National Championships. On the contrary, to have the opportunity to train along side athletes of this calibre should be an inspiration to everyone!

Because of security measures during the holding camp period, access to the John Charles Aquatic Centre will be restricted to swimmers and coaches only and parents will not be able to access the building during this time. There are measures in place however, to make facilities available in the stadium adjacent to the pool for parents who would normally wait for their children.

Security procedures will be in place for swimmers and staff for this period and ACCESS WILL BE DENIED TO ANY SWIMMER OR STAFF MEMBER WHO DOES NOT FOLLOW THESE PROCEDURES. Further information will be sent out shortly which will confirm the detail of the procedures which we will be required to adhere to.

I have listed any changes to our groups training times below. You will see as mentioned that there is very little change to the timetable but it makes it clear what the arrangements will be during this period.

North Eastern Counties

Here is the first weekend of the big one.  Lets SMASH IT!!

Remember use the walls to pick up speed not loose speed, every millisecond counts.  Pick up the effort every 50m and hold your technique when feeling tired.

Just a reminder of the arrival times at Ponds Forge this weekend.  I am unsure of the Pm sessions at the moment but I will post it to the blog once I know.

Am Sessions
Arrive: 07:30
Warm Up: 08:00
Start: 09:00

Training will be only 1 hour on Friday night.  Make sure you all prepare well and stay hydrated over the weekend, it will be very hot on poolside.  Remember your snacks for poolside off the nutrition list.

"Before the (Olympic) trials I was doing a lot of relaxing exercises and visualisation.  And I think that that helped me to get a feel of what It was gonna be like when I got there.  I knew that I had done everything that I could to get ready for that meet, both physically and mentally".  (Michael phelps, 6 Gold Medals, 2004 Olympic Games)

Like Michael Phelps, you should plan in your head what you are going to do in your race.  Visualise your streamlining, kicks off the wall, not breathing last 5m etc and it will happen.  Thinking about it after the race is too late.

Best of luck to you all Winking smile

Kevin

Rotherham Metro Level 1 Meet

Hi all,

I was pleased to recieve this email from Jake's Dad yesterday updating me on how well the swimmers did who competed in the Rotherham meet over the weekend.

Hi Kevin,

I just wanted to give you a quick update of the squads fantastic effort this weekend. Jo and I really enjoyed being poolside with the guys on Saturday and Sunday.

Even though the numbers were few, they finished joint 8th out of 48 teams. The attitude and poolside manner were excellent. What a polite bunch of children and a credit to their parents.

Congratulations to Matthew Kenneth, who did an amazing 200 fly at the end of the Sunday session which secured him a 3rd place finish in the BAGCATS.

Sports Aid Success

Well done to everyone who competed at the Sports Aid.  It was Nina's first time seeing you all compete and she said she was very impressed with how well you all swum.

I was very pleased to see that the group achieved 97 PB's out of 130 Swims, 18 more NER times, 1 National time, 7 Gold Medals, 9 Silver Medals and 6 Bronze Medals.  Another weekend of excellent racing.
In March 2010 the group had only qualified in 5 events at the North Eastern Counties by 5 swimmers.  In 2012 nearly everyone in the squad holds a North Eastern time, qualifying in a number of events.  Keep up the hard work, the training is paying off.

Star Gold Medalists (5) Star
Viktoria (1), Hannah (1), Liam (2), Rebecca (1), Harry (2)

Bronze Medalists (5)
Ciara (1), Shaheen (2), Harry (1), Emily (1), Jake (1)

Well done to Harry who now has 2 National times.  The second swimmer in C Central to ever have a National time.  Open-mouth smile

With the North Eastern's coming up (our major competition) make sure every turn, every start, every finish is practiced like you would do in a race to give yourself a chance of knocking those seconds off and moving up the results sheet to the top.  Try and attend all sessions between now and the North Eastern's to give yourself the best chance of doing well.

Being your best...
"Being your best is not so much about overcoming the barriers other people place in front of you as it is about overcoming the barriers we place in front of ourselves.  It has nothing to do with how many times you win or lose.  It has no relation to where you finish in a race or whether you break world records.  But it does have everything to do with having the vision to dream, the courage to recover from adversity and the determination never to be shifted from your goals".  (Kieren Perkins, 1500m Freestyle Olympic Champion 1992, 1996)

Training Alterations

Hi All,

After looking at this weekends programme nearly all the group are competing over the weekend so there will be no training on Sunday 13th May.

Friday 11th May will just be a one hour session to prepare for the weekends competition.

The Sports Aid programme can be viewed by clicking the link below:

I will be able to sign forms after training on Friday night.

Sports Aid Meet

Saturday & Sunday Am
Arrive: 7:30am
Warm Up: 8:00am
Start: 9:00am

Saturday & Sunday Pm
Arrive: 12:30pm
Warm Up: 1:00pm
Start: 2:00pm

For some of you this will be the last opportunity to qualify for the North Eastern Counties.  If you do get your time over the course of the weekend you must enter the race you have qualified for during the Gala.  Ophelia Rix will be in the timing suite taking last minute entries.  She may only be there on Sunday.  No entries for NER's will be taken on Monday night.

Unfortunately i cannot be there over the weekend as I am competing in Scarborough, so I am sending Nina and Jean to look after you all.

Good Luck to everyone who is racing this weekend.  Remember get in the race from the start, don't play catch up later on, less than a second on the turns and accelerate into the finish.  On 100m races go out like it is a 50m race and hold on when coming back on the second 50m.  If you have done all the sessions your fitness will be high and you should be able to do this no problem.

Remember to pick up the effort on every 50m.  If the length feels the same as the one you have swum before you will be slowing down, if you feel like you are putting in more effort on the length then your time will be the same as the length before which is what you want.

Stand on the block, look sown the lane and Go for GOLD!, Show everyone what C Central is made of.

ALL DAY!!, ALL NIGHT!!
